Overview

Something changed in how ChatGPT builds its answers, and it happened fast. Recent tracking shows Reddit’s share of the sources ChatGPT cites dropped sharply in August, following a change in how ChatGPT searches the web.

The headlines focus on Reddit. The bigger story is what AI platforms are prioritizing instead. PromptWatch, which tracks how brands show up in AI answers, found Reddit supplied about 3.83% of ChatGPT’s cited sources in late July and early August. By mid-August that share had fallen roughly 86%, in a matter of days.

The cause looks structural, not a penalty aimed at Reddit. Starting August 8, ChatGPT began querying brand and expert websites directly, on top of its usual search. Community forums are rarely the target of that kind of question. Google’s AI results barely moved over the same window. PromptWatch’s data shows when this happened. It doesn’t tell us why, and we’d be careful about anyone who claims certainty on that point right now.

What this means for you

  1. Your own website carries more weight than it did a month ago
ChatGPT is going straight to brand sites for answers. If your product pages, FAQs, or category content are thin, that now costs you visibility in a way it didn’t before. Educational content and demonstrated expertise are doing more work than most brands realize.
  2. A single AI visibility number can hide the real picture
ChatGPT and Google moved in opposite directions this month. A blended score across platforms would have flattened that difference into noise. If you’re tracking one number for “AI visibility,” it’s worth asking what that number is actually averaging over.
  3. Guidance from earlier this year deserves a second look
AI search is moving quickly enough that a visibility assessment from this summer may already be dated. That’s not a criticism of the work — it’s the nature of the environment right now.
  4. This shift may hand you more control, not less
You have far more influence over your own site than over a third-party forum thread. As AI systems lean toward authoritative, direct sources, investment in content quality and expertise becomes a lever you actually control — not one you’re hoping a platform respects.

What we’d recommend

We wouldn’t advise pulling back from Reddit based on a few days of data from one tracking source. It still shapes how AI describes a brand even when no link appears, and it still has real value for reaching its own community. What changed is one assumption: a Reddit mention no longer reliably becomes a ChatGPT citation.

The opportunity is the flip side of that. As AI systems look for authoritative answers, owned content becomes a more reliable lever for visibility than a mention you don’t control. Reading ChatGPT and Google separately, rather than through one blended score, is now the more accurate way to see where you stand.

How we’d approach it — five steps, starting now

  1. AI visibility audit — start here
Baseline how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Google AI results, and Perplexity today — by platform, by prompt, by source.
  2. Read the platforms separately
Split ChatGPT and Google in all reporting from here forward, and retire the single blended AI visibility score.
  3. Revisit earlier guidance
Update any recommendation written before August 8 that assumed forum mentions carried ChatGPT weight.
  4. Find the content gaps
Compare your site against the questions AI is actually asking in your category, and prioritize what’s missing.
  5. Own the answer
Publish the expertise, FAQs, and experiences that make you the most direct source of your own answer — then re-audit.
The bottom line: There’s a story being told about your brand, it just may not be your brand’s story

Final thought

The era of optimizing for mentions is giving way to the era of owning the answer. Platforms will keep shifting. Brands that invest in real expertise, useful content, and a strong digital experience earn visibility regardless of which way the algorithm turns next.
